Chicago School economics 'a disaster and a disgrace', says leading analyst | you bet it is

Nose in the paper again I’m reading the Guardian again and today and I ended up on the business pages. I never used to read the business pages, because I thought they were all about which companies had bought which other companies and how much each currency is fluctuating against each other - and there is a lot of that – but there is also some very interesting stuff that crosses the line into politics.

This article, about Chicago School economics, I read today for example is the sort of thing that gives a real insight into what politicians of the Tory and Republican parties (boo, hiss) are thinking. The article is a short summary of some of the ideas of an economist called Roger Bootle.

"A year ago we came perilously close to utter catastrophe," Roger Bootle says. "But the neoliberal, free-market people are already on the warpath. They remind me of some mythical creature – cut off one head and it sprouts more."

Of course this Roger Bootle guy has a new book out and that’s why he’s in the paper, but it does seem to me that he really cares about the economy – and if you ask me the economy is part of society, not something outside it. It is something we have to try to understand and get right, and not just on a national scale, but internationally.

People talk about economies under a few different overarching headings, such as feudal, communist, barter and capitalist, but I don’t think they are particularly helpful. Animals can be talked about under the same overarching headings, such as mammal, fish, marsupial and arachnid, but a whale is a mammal that swims in the sea and a mudskipper is a fish that walks on the land.

In the same way a capitalist economy can develop to be very centrally controlled and limit the availability of wealth, and a communist economy can develop towards the free movement of wealth, ideas and people. In this way it is the direction the economy is moving in that defines it, and gives a clue about whether it is a positive influence on society and people’s overall happiness or not.

I spend most of my time in the UK and Austria, two very similar economies – mostly capitalist, but with healthy doses of socialism thrown in – and there are a lot of good things about these economies, but they are not perfect, and more worrying they seem to be developing in the wrong direction. The movement of wealth, ideas and people is slowing. Wealth is becoming less evenly distributed (the even distribution of wealth is the key) and peoples happiness is plummeting.

I also read – in the Guardian of course – about similar negative stuff happening across the rest of the world, and the suggestion at the end of the article about going towards a single world currency seems to be one tiny piece in the puzzle of getting the world economy right.

>you can read about the beautiful Dragonbat with his nose in the paper illustration and how it was done at Starbright Illustrations.

Animation

I'm animating again, and this time with my own blog new animation blog at http://animationbay.blogspot.com and this is the first animation I uploaded..

One thing that I find annoying about blogger is that it converts animated gifs into jpegs and so renders them lifeless, I'
m hosting the animations at metacafe right now as a workaround. They are a profit sharing alternative to youtube and my stuff seems to get more views as well.

The Coffee Goblin

This is two images created and posted in the same day, I'm very proud of myself. Although it is two oclock in the morning, maybee there isn't that much to be proud of.
Buy t-shirts

Uploading the image is giving me a bit of a problem, seven tries and still no luck. The uploader isn't very reliable with my dodgy 3modem in another country connection to the internet. The connection keeps dropping out, probably for just seconds at a time, but the uploader doesn't seem to be able to cope. I'll give up and just save this as a draft. Hey, I waited five minutes and bingo, it worked. No idea why but I should just be happy I guess.

Ironing Man

I just saw the trailor for Iron Man the movie last night and was moved to respond in my own artistic fashion. And of course it is available to buy as a tshirt design at redbubble, just click the button.
Buy t-shirts

I have always been a big fan of Iron Man, and this may not be a great reason but, because of the cool way he holds his hand out in a "talk to the hand" gesture and his palm blaster shoots a cool beam out. I am particularly proud of this illustration because I have included a scan of a bit of fabric as the cover for the ironing board, I think it works well and looks nice, I have spared a couple of thoughts to the copyright situation but I'm fairly sure that an image like this which is sending something up is OK. I'm still in Australia after 5 months on holiday but I'm going to be back in the UK soon. It'll be good to see the old place again I guess.

A little pink fish

Another t-shirt design for redbubble. Redbubble mutes the colours as can be seen in their add below to reflevct the colours on a printed t-shirt more accurately.

I really like this design and I am toying with the idea of producing versions in different cvolours.

The Spiral Cat Bat Super Guy

This is an image I created to primarily be sold as a t-shirt design on redbubble.

I think it looks great as a t-shirt but I'm not entirely sure who would be interested in..

...wearing it. It isn't as comercial as I hoped when I first designed it. I'm going to have to concentrate more on designs which more people would be interested in I think. I really made it first as a logo for a site talking about comic books which I thought I could create but after my last visit to a comic book store it's dawned on me how hoplessly out of touch with the genre I am. It might be fun to reaquaint myself with it and write about the journey.

Another t-shirt design, this one a sick bunny

I did the sketch for this design this morning. I saw a stain on a wall (I let my imagination play with it, just as Leonardo Da Vinci recomends in order to prompt creativity) and it looked a bit like a sick bunny. I drew it in my sketch book, worked on it with photoshop and here it is. This design is available to Buy t-shirts
I am really enjoying doing these designs for red bubble it gives me a great incentie to do work. The blogging and other sites have me busier at the sketch pad drawing board etc. than ever before. I am in Australia right now and the wall stain was at a marina on Pott's Point in Sydney.

It's a blue fairy

I have been thinking about tshirt designs since I sold a tshirt design on redbubble recently. here is the illustration I put together for my latest design

I have been thinking that I will be using this space, this blog as a portfolio and organising through the tags so it might happen that the design changes from time to time depending on whether I think a children's publisher or games company is looking at it.

A Robot Bad Guy

This is a sketch for a robot bad guy to be used in my
Tarazet story,if I ever manage to devote the time to
it to get it off the ground. In the mean time it is a rich
source of inspiration for illustrations.

This robot is influenced by the classic designs in the
UK comic 2000ad including deadlock. I love the
idea of inanimate machines being able to interact
with spirits and control magic, just like a human
caharacter in a story, and so although Hamerstien
was my favourite character in ABC Warriors,
Deadlock has also
left a lasting impression.

Vampire Girl

Vampire girl is a natural friend for all the monsters that I will be introducing you to in this blog, Dragonbat, Jello Boy, Super Goth, Space Crocodino, Giroid, Wrinkles, Shroom, Ghost Penguin and of course you already met Space Mummy. Vampire Girl is a very magical young lady, and she can travel to many areas of space and time that would seem very remote to us, especially to play a good chess opponent.
All these strange monstrous figments of my imagination seem to enjoy a game of chess, even though I myself am a little at a loss during a game. I have limited her pallet in this image to just three colours and tried to create her exclusively with vector shapes so I can create a t-shirt with spread shirt that is printed their preferred way, something impossible with a normal jpeg.
Poor Vampire Girl must avoid sunlight, even with shades and her umbrella she just can't abide it. Her name, although it is not common knowledge is Violeta, and her castle exists on a nexus point in space and time.
Vampire Girl is a creation of me and my girlfriend (see our blog http://spiralcattalks.blogspot.com ) and she was inspired by a visit to Mirimar castle in Trieste. The real castle has a spooky twilight aura about it and it is overrun with cats. Vampire Girl's castle is also overrun with cats.
I guess Vampire Girl is a little like Emily the Strange but then again wouldn't we all like to be a little like Emily the Strange. Morticia in the Adams family is also an influence, and that shape changing woman from Space 1999, many, many others of course, Sapphire from Sapphire and Steel is another. I think these female characters who act a little differently to the way society expects are some of the most interesting characters.test

Morvanwin a Spacewoman

Another illustration. This is from a story of my own called Tarazet that I'm planning. This illustration is of one of the main characters who is called Morvanwin and is a science fiction shaman, or wise woman. She uses a science fiction version of the Tarot cards which I'm also designing right now. I have some black and white sketches and I'll post then as soon as I've added colour.
